Proverbs 18:1: Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

SECRET AND REVEALED

“The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

There are many things that I do not understand, cannot comprehend, and God has not revealed. But He understands, comprehends, and knows them. I may not know what He is doing, but He does, and I trust Him. He is and whatever He does is right because He is God! And we leave it there! Not with a sullen resignation, but with joy and confidence in Him! “The secret things belong to the Lord.”

But there are also the things which are revealed. Whatever He has revealed we are bound to believe and obey. He has revealed that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Rather than grappling with questions that we cannot answer, we are to call on His Name to save us. That can be said regarding all that He has revealed. We are called upon to trust Him in what we do not see, and obey Him in what we do see. Oh, for grace to trust Him in what we do not see and obey Him in what we do see!

Walk in Love

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour (Ephesians 5:2).

Here is the key to all that is commanded, expected, and needed for godliness and sanctification.

1.)    Walk in love to God our Father, who has given us all things in Christ (Eph. 1:3).

2.)    Walk in love to Christ for the love He has for us, the relationship we have with Him, and the things He has done for us (1 John 4:19-21).

3.)    Walk in love one to another (Eph. 4:32).

Our example of love is Christ our Lord, who loved us and gave Himself for us. If Christ so loved us, we ought also to love one another. This principle of love is the gift of God and is sufficient motivation for mercy, forgiveness, kindness, and all godliness.

FOUR PERSONAL QUESTIONS

1.      If God treated you the same as you treat others, what would be your condition?

2.      If God forgave you in the same measure of your forgiveness to others, would all your sins be gone?

3.      If God accepted you the same as you accept others, would you be accepted before His Throne?

4.      If God judged you by the same standard that you judge others, would you be justified?

–Donnie Bell

?-----------------------------?

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power” (Col 2:8-10).

MY BELOVED BRETHREN

1 Cor 16:6: And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go.

Paul desired to visit Corinth.  He called them “my beloved brethren” (1 Cor 15:58).  This was Paul’s spirit after all the sins he addressed in his letter: there was “envying, and strife, and divisions” over preachers. Many, along with a brother who sinned, were puffed up rather than mourning with broken, repentant hearts.  They sued each other in courts of law.  Some so misunderstood the gospel that they thought they should divorce unbelieving spouses, reject their masters and change the cultural garments distinguishing men from women. Others abused their liberty before weak believers. They did not support their pastor financially.  They turned the Lord’s table into a drunken feast.  Some exalted themselves due to gifts.  If they did not allow women to preach, they at least considered it. They were listening to false preachers, even questioning the resurrection of the dead.

Yet, after all this, Paul wrote, “I write NOT these things to shame you, but as MY BELOVED SONS I warn you” (1 Cor 4:14) Correct them?  Yes.  But Paul never treated the church at Corinth as anything but brethren, even eager to spend the winter with them.  Brethren, be hesitant to condemn brethren as cast aways based on outward conduct.  Peter went so far as to deny he knew the Lord and attempted to depart the faith.  Yet, Christ recovered him.  Trust that Christ is teaching his people.  We think these troubles get in the way of the ministry—BUT THESE TROUBLES ARE THE MINISTRY.  These troubles are how Christ teaches us. He is ruling all.  Never doubt one another as brethren.  Be lovers of mercy.  More ready to forgive than to condemn.  Christ will teach us in time.

?-----------------------------?

After listening to messages preached by faithful men, I have noticed that in the early years of their ministry, there is a lot more vinegar mingled with grace.  But in the latter years of their ministry, there is far more love and grace and much less vinegar. Isaiah spent the early part of his letter writing “woe to you, woe to you” and the latter half saying, “woe is me.”

Let me be far more eager to judge myself and far less eager to condemn others. Grace and forgiveness make God’s people want to live more honorably but law and condemnation never does.  God will keep and teach his people.  I am only to proclaim his word and receive them as brethren, praying for them as I wait on Christ to work in their heart.
