The Law and the Prophets Bear Witness
Deuteronomy 34: 9
The apostle Paul used the law of the woman who is married to a man to illustrate how Christ's Bride, God's elect, are freed from the law by the death of Christ (Romans 7: 1-4.) As long as the husband lives the bride is bound to him by law. But if he dies then the law bears witness that she is free to be married to another. So it is that God's children died to the law when Christ died and are free to come under the rule of another, even Christ (Romans 7:4). The law and the prophets bear witness that the righteousness of the law, without man's doing, is fulfilled by the Faith and Fidelity of Christ Jesus (Romans 3: 21-22.)
Now read Deuteronomy 34: 9: "Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him." Moses is a type of the law and Moses was also a prophet of God. By Moses laying his hands on Joshua we see a type of the law and the prophets (the whole word of God) bearing witness that the righteousness of God is Christ alone. Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on Joshua. Christ Jesus is the spirit and the wisdom of the law and the prophets, that is, both came by the Spirit of Christ and both are they which testify of Christ (1 Pet 1: 11). Christ Jesus is the Power and Wisdom in his Person, the Fulfillment of the law and the prophets--the one in whom God is just and the Justifier of his people--by his work. This is the Salvation of his people--Christ Jesus the Person who finished the work--which God has declared in the law and the prophets from the beginning.
