"I would that our fleece might now be so wet as never to become dry throughout the whole year. Oh, for a horn of oil to be poured on the head of the young year, anointing it for the constant service of the Lord." Charles Spurgeon.

FOR MY BRETHREN WHO ARE NEAR

When the children of Israel came to the edge of Canaan they found giants which would have to be overcome before they entered.  So it is now with many of you, my brethren, who are near the eternal land of our Lord's promise.  A body failing, disease which has taken its toll, and the thought of death, may stand as tall as giants.

Yet, the same God of grace that delivered you in the beginning by his gracious call, the same God who has delivered you through every trial as you passed through this wilderness, is the same God who shall now deliver you by his grace.  So it was with Caleb who said, "The Lord is with us, fear them not."

Oh, the thought! Just as we closed our eyes Friday night, December 31 to awake Saturday morning to this new year, so shall you close your eyes in this world of sorrow and open them in glory to all things made new by Christ our Lord!

My dear brethren--my fathers and mothers in the bond of Christ--read Revelation 21: 1-7 and think on these things!  It is not you that are passing away, but the sin and sorrow of this world that is passing away from you.

All things made new for you by the Lord Jesus Christ--yes, the never-ending year of jubilee--is almost here!  Our faithful Savior has overcome, it is by his faithfulness that you shall.  May the Lord comfort you with his precious promise--"He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son."

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
Psa. 23:1

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." What a promise! What a glorious inheritance! What a blessed comfort! Walk in it, believer; lie down upon it; trust in it; rest upon it. It will do for all the days of your life and be a soft pillow for your death. When the news is not good, when your body is tired, when disappointment and doubts fill your mind, when the flesh is weary and weak and you lie upon your bed staring into the sleepless darkness asking yourself, "What shall I do?" hum to yourself these blessed words, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." Those words will be like a lullaby to your soul, and you will find rest.                                   Pastor Henry T. Mahan

Psalm 139: 17: How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18: If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

Our minds are active and will be doing something, though to little purpose; and if they be not fixed upon some noble object, they will, like madmen and fools, be mightily pleased in playing with straws. The thoughts of God were the first visitors David had in the morning.  God and his heart met together as soon as he was awake, and kept company all the day after.

                                                                         Stephen Charnock

BECAUSE IT KNEW HIM NOT

This world is merely a place the believer is passing through.  We are strangers to this world and the people of this world are strangers to us because we are children of our Father.  "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not." 1 John 3:1.

NOT OUR WAYS

Isaiah 55: 6-9

God is not impressed with our achievements—if we had a righteousness to present to the LORD we would boast in it; if we had a will to seek after God we would poke out our chest; if we could bring about holiness by our flesh we would oppress and look down our noses on everyone who does not match our ways.

Do we have such a high thought of ourselves that we are too full of pride to come down off our throne?  Is our life so important that we can not lay it down to follow the Lord of glory?  Oh, don’t wait till you have finished living your life to lay it down.  You never will.  Lay down your life now, make yourself of no reputation and cast all your care on the Lord Jesus Christ.  His thoughts are so opposite to ours that God will have mercy and abundantly pardon all who do.
