Proverbs 16:7: When a man’s ways please the LORD, he
maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

HE GIVETH HIS LIFE
FOR THE SHEEP
John 10:1
Jesus Chris
appeared in this world as a representative and substitute of a people given to
Him by the Father before the world began.
Both His life and His death were vicarious. (Vicarious according to the dictionary means
something performed or endured by one person substituting for another or
appearing in the place of another.)
In Romans 8:33
it says, “who shall lay anything to the
charge of Gods elect? It is God that
justifieth.” All of Gods elect have
redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches
of His grace. (see Ephesians 1:3-7) To
view the death of Christ in any other way is to view His death as a vain
attempt by an impotent god, who sacrificed his son for nothing. To view His death in any other way destroys
the wisdom of God, violates the justice of God, and turns the love of God into
a mere passion.
Christ died for our sins according to the
scripture, and according to the scriptures His death was vicarious. –Darvin
Pruitt

Through
poverty, through wealth, through sickness, through health, at home, abroad, on
the land, on the sea, in honor, in dishonor, in perplexity, in joy, in trial,
in triumph, in prayer, in temptation, “hitherto hath the Lord helped us!” –Charles
Spurgeon

Kind
reader, the days of Noah have come again. Man has made man his god. It is later
than most people think. All the great changes and revolutions now coming in the
world are but the turning of the wheels of providence making way for the second
personal coming of Christ. Do not the present world-shaking events prove beyond
a doubt that we have fallen into the dregs of time, and that the end is nigh,
even at our doors? We see according to scripture, that “evil men are waxing
worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Tim. 3:13). Man has made man
his god! “Cease ye from man!” (Isa 2:22). Said Jesus, “There is none good but
One, that is God.”

The all-wise God, whose never-failing providence ordereth
every event, usually makes what we set our hearts upon unsatisfactory; and
sweetens what we feared: bringing real evil out of seeming good; and real good
out of seeming evil; to shew us what short-sighted creatures we are, and to
teach us to live by faith upon his blessed self.
–Augustus Toplady

While I am enabled to see
that Jesus is my portion every dispensation comes in a way of mercy. When my
heart is under the assurance that my Lord is in it, it matters not what it is.
His presence alone hath the wonderful property of converting crosses and pains
into enjoyments and pleasures. Every affliction which comes directed by His
hand, hath the sure mark of affection folded up within the cover; and while I
sit down with tenfold pleasure to the enjoyment of the thousands of mercies
which my God is continually giving me, because I behold with the eye of faith
his presence at the table smiling graciously upon all, I no less am enabled, in
the hour of calamity to await the issue, because I can and do hear with the ear
of faith that soul-sustaining voice, ‘What I do thou knowest not now, but thou
shalt know hereafter.’ Oh, the sweetness of having ‘Jesus for our portion!’ and
‘of living a life of faith upon the Son of God, who hath loved me, and given
himself for me!’
–Robert Hawker

Ah!
believers, you are a tempted people. You are always poor and needy. And God
intends it should be so, to give you constant errands to go to Jesus. We have a merciful and faithful High Priest.
He suffered, being tempted, just that He might succour them that are
tempted. The high priest of old not only
offered sacrifice at the altar,—His work was not done when the lamb was
consumed. He was to be a father to Israel. He carried all their names graven
over his heart,—He went in and prayed for them within the veil. He came out and
blessed the people, saying, “The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The Lord make
his face shine,” etc. (Num. 6:24–26).
So it is with the Lord Jesus. His work was
not all done on Calvary. He that died for our sins lives to pray for us,—to
help in every time of need. He is still man on the right hand of God. He is
still God, and therefore, by reason of His divinity, is present here this day
as much as any of us. He knows your every sorrow, trial, difficulty; every half-breathed
sigh He hears, and brings in notice thereof to his human heart at the right
hand of God. His human heart is the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever; it
pleads for you, thinks on you, plans deliverance for you.
Dear tempted brethren! Go boldly to the
throne of grace, to obtain mercy and find grace to help you in your time of
need.
Are you bereaved of one you loved? Go and
tell Jesus; spread out your sorrows at his feet. He knows them all; feels for
you in them all. He is a merciful High Priest. He is faithful too, never
awanting in the hour of need. He is able to succour you by His word, by His
Spirit, by His providence. He gave you all the comfort you had by your friends.
He can give it you without them. He has taken away the stream that you may go to
the fountain.
Are you suffering in body? Go to this High
Priest. He is intimately acquainted with all your diseases; He has felt that
very pain. Remember how, when they brought to Him one that was deaf and had an
impediment in his speech, He looked up to heaven and sighed, and said,
Ephphatha! [be thou opened] He sighed over his misery. So He sighs over you. He
is able to give you deliverance, or patience to bear it, or improvement by it.
Are you sore tempted in soul—put into
trying circumstances, so that you know not what to do? Look up; He is able to
succour you. If He had been on earth, would you not have gone to Him—would you
not have kneeled and said, Lord, help me? Does it make any difference that He
is at the right hand of God? He is the same yesterday, to-day, and for
ever.
–Robert M’Cheyne
