Psalm 7: 1: «Shiggaion of David, which he sang unto the LORD, concerning the words of Cush the Benjamite.» O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: 2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
O LORD MY GOD
· LORD—Jehovah—there is but one true and living God—Jehovah—holy, righteous, just.
· LORD MY God—Is the LORD MY God? The Psalmist says, O LORD, MY God. This is the question we need to answer about ourselves—is the LORD MY God? It is not a question I need to answer for the person sitting next to me. This is the question for me to answer for myself. Is JEHOVAH, MY God? Here is the question to consider: Do I—me—(ask this about yourself)—do I put my trust in God?
In thee do I put my trust:
· In thee—in God—not in another, not in myself—in God only.
· In thee do I—no one else can do this for me—in thee do I
· In thee do I put MY TRUST
When will I put my trust in God? David says,--v1:…save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: 2: Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
· Save me—a sinner will put his trust in God only when he realizes he needs salvation.
· Deliver me—only when we know we need to be snatched out of the hand of the enemy
· There is none to deliver—a sinner will put his trust in only God when we realize God is the only one who is able to deliver me.
Background:
Someone accused David of treason to King Saul and a host of Saul’s men were hunting David down to put him to death. Someone accuses you me of treason to God the King.
· Satan—the Accuser of the brethren—that roaring lion—says of me and of you, ‘He is guilty of the highest crime, guilty of trying to dethrone God!”
· God’s own holy and just law says of every sinner in ourselves—“Guilty!” God says in
Psalm 50: 22: “Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

God says, “There is none righteous, no not one.” (Romans 3: 10.) David needed to be justified of all charges. You and I do too. David needed to be declared righteous. You and I do too. God is the only one who is the Justifier. God is the only one who has Wisdom to justify according to the Justice—his justice—which we need to be justified by.
Romans 3:26: To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
God was David’s one defense.
Psalm 7: 10: My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. 11: God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
So David did the one thing the pleases God—the one thing God requires of sinners—he put all his trust in the Lord asking God to defend him--Psalm 7: 1: O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: 2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
What is “trust”— Lets’ focus on this word “trust.”
It involves my confidence, my hope—it is to trust that God is worthy of trusting and that God is able. It also has to do with what I am entrusting to God—My trust is my entire estate—my eternal soul, my entire, eternal well-being. I was blessed when I begin to think of a “trust fund.”
“A trust fund”—simplest form--is when property is transferred by one party to be held by another party for the benefit of a third party.
Example that illustrates the gospel: A father makes his eldest son a trustee of all his estate—he gives it over to his son—the father trusts his son. His son gives the inheritance to the rest of his children at the time appointed.
Proposition: We learn what “trust” is by looking at God the Father and God the Son, Christ Jesus. And we learn why God is the only one worthy to be trusted. And by beholding this great work God has performed we are persuaded to put our trust in him.
I. The Trust of God.
A. The Trustor--God the Father trusted God the Son, Christ Jesus to glorify his name in the salvation of chosen sinners. God the Father is the first party—the Trustor.
B. The Trustee--Christ Jesus the Son of God is the second party—the Trustee--God entrusted Christ. Note: “A self-declared trust” is when the Trustor and Trustee are one. God the Father and God the Son are one. Christ is God and Man—in Christ God gathers his children in one.
C. The Beneficiaries--there is a third party in a trust—beneficiaries. God’s ‘Trust” was made and fulfilled by God in his Son for the benefit of a third party, the elect children chosen of God and given to him.
II. God saves his children in Christ to glorify his own name in his Son.
Romans 8: 29: For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
III. In God the Father and his Son Christ Jesus we see perfect trust. We see the faithfulness of God in Christ.
A. Christ honored the Father—he accomplished the justification of his people through his death at Calvary. When Christ came forth in the flesh—as a Man—Christ trusted the Father. (another day—we will see Christ typified in David).
John 17: 1: These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
B. The Father honored the Son—he raised him from the dead and gave to his Son the inheritance promised.
C. This was God’s will and his good pleasure that all things be gathered together in heaven and in earth—in one—in Christ--that we receive the inheritance through Christ who both God and his people are gathered in one—this is Trust.
Ephesians 1: 9: Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13: In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation:…
D. His Son gives that which he has made his people a joint-heir. The gospel—the good news—is God calling his children to put all their trust in Christ—In thee do I put my trust. Those who put their trust in Christ, being born of the Spirit of God, are “joint-heirs with Christ.”
Romans 8: 17: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Application: David was pleading for God to justify him—to rise to the judgment he commanded—for his sake and the people’s sake (a picture of Christ’s intercession for his people.) Justification and Righteousness is an inheritance given of God the Father through his Son, Christ Jesus, to God’s children. God says this of all who trust him?
Isaiah 54: 7: No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”
Do you see “trust” when you see how God the Father trusted his Son? How the Son trusted the Father? Now, the gospel is God’s command—may it come now in effectual power—“put your trust in his Son.”
Psalm 7: 1: O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me
God delights in those who put their trust in him. All that God requires of a sinner is to trust God—his Son, Christ Jesus. Not one that ever trusted in him has been ashamed.
