Title: Kiss the Son
Text: Psalm 2: 1-12

In the midst of a world that is against God the believer finds the greatest comfort in knowing, “Thy God reigneth!”
A host of wicked men opposed God and David whom God chose to be King, yet, God set David upon the throne of that political kingdom Israel. But that only foreshadowed God’s true anointed, his Christ, his King, the true King of kings, and Lord of lords, Christ Jesus the King.
Proposition: The message of Psalm 2 is this: it is useless to oppose God. The LORD has sent forth his Son, Christ Jesus, who has accomplished the redemption of his people and is now exalted to the throne of his spiritual kingdom. O, kiss the Son—O worship the King all glorious above!
Divisions: The Psalm is divided into 4 stanza’s. We will use these as our divisions. 1. (vv 1-3) the nations rage against God and his Christ; 2: (vv 2: 4-6) the purpose of God is not frustrated at all; 3: (vv 7-9) the Son proclaims the decree; 4: (vv10-12) wise counsel is given
I. BEHOLD THE NATIONS RAGING AGAINST GOD.
Psalm 2: 1: Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
Who is this question about? It is to every man born of Adam who has not born again of the Spirit of God. Who was responsible for attempting to reject God by nailing the Prince of Life to the cursed tree? It was fallen humanity.
Acts 4:27-28: For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done."
In verses 2-3, we have a description of human nature—hatred, enmity--against God and his Christ.
Psalm 2: 2: The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
This is what Satan has tried to do from the beginning—“I will be as the most High” (Isa. 14:12-15). It is what Adam tried and plunged the whole human race into sin—‘ye shall be as gods’ (Gen. 3:5-6). It is what all natural born men attempt today—both the organized political leaders and nations of the world, and the organized religion of this world—‘when a man puts trust in his wisdom, his righteousness, his holiness, and calls it liberty, he is saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. (2 Cor. 11:3-4, 13-15),
This scripture sets before us the vanity of such a vain imagination. Notice this is the strongest opposition the creature can muster against God and against Christ.
· The strongest, most influential, most powerful men in the earth--v2: The kings of the earth…and the rulers
· The strongest enthusiasm—rage
· The strongest determination--they set themselves
· The strongest, most well-laid plans of men—they took counsel together.
The thing that makes this so vain is it is against the LORD, and against his anointed.
Salvation is accomplished by the will and work of God, in Christ Jesus through the Holy Spirit, through the declaration of the gospel. But the slavery—the very bondage—of sin and Satan makes the natural born heart of man hate God, hate for God to rule in heaven in earth—over creation, over providence, and especially, in salvation.
The man of dust, who considers himself a king, considers he is wise, considers his counsel more worthy than God’s way and says, “We will not have this man to reign over us.” (Luke 19: 14.)…saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
Romans 8: 7: Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
II. GOD’S PURPOSE IS NEVER ALTERED BY MEN.
Shall men set themselves in opposition to omnipotence, and hope to prosper? Shall worms of the dust preven God from doing what he purposed from eterinity—from glorify his anointed Son, and saving his people from their sins?
Psalm 2: 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
· Men-dust of the earth, plot and scheme—v4: God sits in the heavens
· Men set themselves—God laughs
· Men take counsel together—the Lord has them in derision (confusion)

· God merely took his restraining hand off and wicked hands:
Acts 4: 28:…for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
Psalm 2: 5: Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
Then just as he took his restraints off so that politics and religion fulfilled his purpose in crucifiying his Son, so he took his hand off their enemies and leveled Jerusalem to the ground in 70AD.
Job 5:13: He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
But did the rage of men alter God’s purpose at all?
Pslam 2: 6: Yet… after all Satan’s schemes and man’s enmity against God and his Christ…YET have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
This testifies before the whole world, that Christ accomplished the work God sent him to do. Christ fulfilled all that was written of him. Christ fulfilled the righteousness of the law for his people. Christ satisfied justice for his people. We know Christ is All unto us, brethren, because God has set his King upon his holy hill of Zion.
This declares God is indeed sovereign over all creation—he raised him from the dead. God is sovereign over providence—all the host of hell only accomplished his eternal purpose. God is sovereign in salvation—Christ hath accomplished the redemption of all those given him of the Father.
This is the peace in the hearts of those anointed of the Spirit of Christ—all the host of hell can never stop or even frustrate God from bringing to pass his eternal purpose. Christ shall have the glory and his people shall be saved in him with an everlasting salvation. Oh, God come now and set Christ in the hearts of your people here.

III. NOW LET’S HEAR THE SON OF GOD, THE RISEN CHRIST AND KING DECLARE THE DECREE
Psalm 2: 7: I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
What is this decree? The power we just saw that God is—as Mediator of his people—having accomplished the will of God—redemption—all power is given to Christ of the Father in heaven and earth. It is what the LORD promised Christ before the world was made.
Zechariah 6: 12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: 13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
The glory in making his name known in the hearts of his own goes to Christ Jesus the Son of God—I WILL DECLARE THE DECREE!
Revelations 5: 1-10:..Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Christ shall have all those promised him of the Father.
Psalm 2: 8: Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
John 17: 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. 24: Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
All judgment is given to Christ—his own he shall break by the rod of his word in mercy and the stubborn and rebellious he shall break in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
Psalm 2: 9: Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
Application: The church at Corinth was established by Paul preaching Christ and him crucified. But they were being turned from the simplicity that is in Christ by so-called wise men. It caused the brethren to err. So much so they even doubted if Paul was an apostle. Paul said,
1 Corinthians 3: 18: Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19: For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
IV: THE WISE COUNSEL GIVEN
Psalm 2: 10: Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
The apostle Paul was sent of Christ to preach the gospel in simplicity.
1 Corinthians 1: 17: For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
1 Corinthians 2: 1: And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2: For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3: And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
Because Paul was a servant of the King. He was sent with the King’s message. He was an ambassador, not sent to proclaim his own words but only the words of the king. He did so in fear and trembling. Be wise, be instructed, Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
Psalm 2: 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
This is a kiss of reconciliation.
No kisses when enmity reigns. No kisses when division is in the heart. Kisses come when peace is established. No law to establish—Christ has done that for all for whom he represented and the believer by faith in our Representative. No justice to satisfy—Christ has done that and the believer by faith in Christ our Substitute. Is it too difficult a burden to bid you?—Kiss the Son?
When the Spirit brings this home to your heart the Spirit of God makes a new heart, gives a new will, puts love in the heart, in all this, the Spirit draws the sinner, bows the sinner, and leads you to give Christ the kiss of reconciliation this very day. Then we kiss the Son in gratitude for reconciliation.

Kiss of allegiance and homage.
Bow your knee, and come and own him to be a monarch, and say, “Other lords have had dominion over us; we have worshipped our lusts, our pleasures, our pride, our selfishness, but now will we submit ourselves to thine easy yoke. Take us and make us thine, for we are willing to be thy subjects —this kiss is a pledge of allegiance to Christ.

This is the Kiss of affection and gratitude. What liberty!—to have our minds changed so that we submit to God to save in Christ through the declaration of his gospel (this is what it is to be granted repentance and faith.)
Psalms 2:12: “Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”
