WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT
Ephesians 5: 5: For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean
person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the
kingdom of Christ and of God. 6: Let no man deceive you with vain words: for
because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of
disobedience. 7: Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8: For ye were
sometimes darkness, but now are ye
light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and
truth;) 10: Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Concerning the children of
disobedience and darkness, Christ says to his regenerate saints, “Be not ye therefore partakers with them.” Light and darkness can have no fellowship! (2
Cor 6: 14) But according to Christ’s
promise sin shall not dominion over the child of Light but he will walk in the
light of Christ. He is not without sin.
But he now hates it because sin is against Christ who redeemed him by
his precious blood. Walking in the light, as God is Light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ his
Son cleanseth us from all sin. (1 Jn 1: 5-7)
Walking as children of light is to walk in
“the Spirit” as opposed to walking in
the flesh. It is to be led of the Spirit, to walk after the Spirit, to submit
to the Spirit who causes us to look to Christ.
It is to walk “in all goodness” which comes from Christ to us. “O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD,
Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; But to the saints that are
in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.” (Ps 16:
2-3) When we err, “the goodness of God
leadeth thee to repentance?” (Rom 2: 4) “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that
doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.” (3 Jn 1:
11)
To walk as children of light is to “walk in all righteousness.” Christ is
our Righteousness. God’s elect are made the righteousness of God in Christ. Christ
purged our sin, justified us, and robed us in his righteousness. Therefore, we
live unto Christ our Righteousness, “Who
his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree that we, being dead to
sins, should live unto Righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1
Pet 2: 24) In our sinless new man we love
that which Christ says is right (1 Jn 2:29; 3: 9-10) because we are “filled with the fruits of righteousness, which
are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.” (Php 1: 11)
To walk as children of light is to “walk in all truth.” We walk in the truth
of redemption accomplished for us by
Christ and sanctification accomplished within
us by Christ, rejoicing that out of his wounded side flowed blood and
water. We walk in the gospel of Christ in spirit and in truth. And believers are truthful with men.
Walking as children of light is to “prove what is acceptable unto the Lord.”
(Eph 5: 10) We “test” all things by the
word of God. We “discern” all things by spiritual discernment. And we “approve”
what our Lord approves of. (1 Thes 5:5-10)
