Our deepest sympathy to brother Kevin Thacker and family.  But we rejoice for his mother, sister Sue Thacker (Ps 17: 15).

MY LOVE FOR CHRIST

I have a painful complaint, a bitterness in my soul that is well-nigh unbearable.  My love for Christ is so horribly little that I often fear I have no love for him at all.

Yet, bless God, honesty will not allow me to say, horrible thought, I do not love Him.  Oh no!  When I hear my Savior say, ‘Lovest thou me?’ I hang my head with shame, but confess, ‘Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.’  We love Him, because He first loved us.’
I take great comfort and delight in this: soon, I will love my Savior perfectly!  As soon as these eyes are closed in death, as soon as I have gasped my last breathe in this weak, mortal, sinful frame.  I will love Him who is altogether lovely as He ought to be loved.  Don Fortner

Oh, The Wonder Of It! Ephesians 1: 6-7—When I think of the wonder, majesty, and glory of God, I can hardly believe that such a worm as I am should be called to be an heir of His grace.  Yet, it is just this vast difference that manifests the glory of His grace.  He who is the highest, the holiest, and the greatest has set His affection on the lowest, the most sinful, and weakest. It is "to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved,  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace."   Darvin Pruitt

EFFECTS OF BELIEF IN ELECTION

When we truly realize that the Lord of heaven and earth CHOSE US in Christ to salvation, redeemed us by His blood, and called us by His gospel, it will have a seven-fold effect on us.

1. It will cause us to REJOICE! "O blessed is the man whom Thou choosest and causeth to approach unto Thee." Praise Him from whom all blessings flow.

2. It will promote HUMILITY! "Who maketh thee to differ?" Grace and pride are incompatible, impossible to exist together. We rejoice in Christ and have no confidence in this flesh.

3. It will COMFORT us in hard trials! "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away." Even these work together for our good and His glory. When we trust Him, we don't have to understand.

4. It will SUPPRESS self and sin! "We are not our own;" we are bought with so great a price. Therefore we desire to glorify our Lord in our souls and in our bodies.

5. It gives us ASSURANCE! If God foreknew us, predestinated us to be like Christ, justified us, called us by His Spirit, if Christ redeemed us, intercedes for us and is for us, who can be against us?

6. It makes DYING easier! The eternal covenant of grace in Christ was David's pillow of rest and peace when he lay dying (II Sam. 23:1-5). He sought no other source of comfort and hope than the sovereign love of God in Christ.

7. It will assure us that our PREACHING IS NEVER IN VAIN! "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth; it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isa.55:11). This cannot be applied to all preaching, ONLY TO THE PREACHING OF HIS WORD!  Henry Mahan

CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3).

The gospel is not just that Christ died. The gospel is how that He died for us according to God’s eternal and immutable decree, “the scriptures” (Acts 2:23: Revelation 13:8).

• The scriptures declare that His death was appointed (Genesis 3:15; 22:8; Psalm 22; Psalm 69; Matthew 16:21; Galatians 4:4).

• The scriptures declare that His death was voluntary, He willingly laid down His life for us (Isaiah 53:7; John 10:17-18).

• The scriptures declare that His death was substitutionary (Isaiah 53:4-6; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 3:18).

• The scriptures declare that His death was to accomplish definite atonement for His people (Isaiah 53:8; Matthew 1:21; John 10:15; Hebrews 2:17).

• The scriptures declare that His death satisfied all the demands of God’s holy Law (Isaiah 42:21; 53:10-12; Daniel 9:24; Rom. 4:25).

• The scriptures declare that His death was most effectual to put away all the sin of the covenant people (Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 38;17; Micah 7:18-20; Hebrews 9:26; 10:17; 1 John 1:7).

Every pledge of salvation has its accomplishment in the Lord Jesus Christ: “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us” (2 Corinthians 1:21). All that God has promised concerning salvation in Christ is certain and sure: “And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform” (Romans 4:21).   Tom Harding
