SUNDAY’S READING IN PROVERBS

Proverbs 11: 12: He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace. 13: A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

GRIEVE NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT – Eph. 4:30

The role of the Holy Spirit in salvation is not to make a show of Himself by making people speak in tongues and act strangely.  The role of the Holy Spirit is to show God’s elect the things of Christ and to give faith to believe Christ by making them be born again.

We grieve the Holy Spirit by a stubborn refusal to believe on Christ as all of our salvation.  We grieve the Holy Spirit when our thoughts about ourselves are too high and our thoughts about Christ are too low.  We grieve the Holy Spirit by living contrary to God’s sovereign grace, freely given to us in Christ. Pastor Frank Tate

Election is not the cause of anybody going to hell, for election is unto salvation.  ( 2 Thessalonians 2: 13)  Neither is non-election responsible for the damnation of sinners.  Sin is the thing that sends men to hell, and all men are sinners by nature and practice; sinners altogether apart from election or non-election. It does not follow that because election is unto salvation that non-election is unto damnation.  Sin is the damning element in human life, election harms nobody. C.D. Cole was a pastor and professor in America (1885-1968)

LEARNING CHRIST

In the few years I have been preaching there is one thing I have learned, it is this, we can never say enough, preach enough, think enough, exalt enough, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Master told us to “take my yoke upon you and learn of me.”  Beloved what a glorious task, Our Lord Jesus gave us. There is so much to learn about His person.

How much do we know about His person as The Eternal God? Oh, the glory of His Godhead. How could he be both God the Son and be God the everlasting Father?

How could He remain God, control all things, uphold all things by the word of His power and yet at one and the same time come into this world He created, and come into the womb of a virgin, and become something He never was before, Man?

But Oh WHAT A MAN! Sinless in His thoughts, sinless in His words, sinless in His deeds, without sin before the Holiness of God Almighty. So Glorious in His sinless life, that the heavens opened one day and God Himself spoke and said; “This is my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” I say Speak Lord, by your grace I will listen.

God helping us let us begin again to “learn of him, take His yoke upon ourselves, learn of his meekness, his lowliness, there is rest for our souls in learning of him”.

The man who knows the most about Christ knows so little, the man who sees Christ the best will say “I see through a glass darkly”. Just because I know so little, doesn’t mean I’m going to stop learning, because  I don’t see all I want too doesn’t mean I’m going to quit looking. Someday in the near future, you and I will see clearly what we now see so dimly. “We shall see Him as He is, and we shall be like him”. But our seeing and our knowing starts here. Do you know Him? Have you COME to Him? Are you learning of Him?  Pastor Donnie Bell

SUBMIT TO THE HIGHER POWERS

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers.” (Rom 13: 1)

Rebellion against authority is a terrible sin promoted in our day. Do not follow the world as they follow the devil in the promotion of anarchy. Submit to all in authority “for there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.  Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” (Rom 13: 1) It means every person in authority is put there by God. Therefore, to resist them is to resist God. And all who do so shall receive from God through that person in authority that which is their just due. You have nothing to fear from those in authority as long as you obey, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. ” (Rom 13: 3-5)

Before the throne of God above

I have a strong, a perfect plea

A great High Priest, whose name is Love

Who ever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven on His hands

My name is written on His heart

I know that while in heav’n He stands

No tongue can bid me to depart.

Because the sinless Savior died

My sinful soul is counted free

For God, the Just, is satisfied

To look on Him and pardon me.

One with Himself, I cannot die

My soul is purchased with His blood

My life is hid with Christ on high

With Christ, my Savior and my God.

IN THE FEAR OF GOD

“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” (Eph 5:21)

When God calls us to life and faith in Christ, rather than abolish the responsibilities we have in our relationships to one another, Christ gives those relationships godly meaning and godly order. In the relationships where we are the authority, Christ teaches us how to rule well and the significance of doing so.  In our relationships where we are to submit, Christ teaches us how to submit and gives each yoke its proper significance.

Notice, the key to submission is “in the fear of God.  Instead of grace making the child of God throw off the yoke of authority, as we behold Christ who put away our sin and condemnation by submitting to the Father even unto the death of the cross, we are given fear to reverence Christ by reverencing those in authority over us and to reverence Christ in our authority over others. This is so in every relationship: wives submit to your husband “as unto the Lord”; husbands love your wives “even as Christ loved the church”, children obey your parents “in the Lord”; fathers bring up your children “in the nuture and admonition of the Lord”; servants obey your masters “as unto Christ”; masters forbear threatening “knowing that your Master is in heaven.” (Eph 5: 22-6: 9)

If those in authority demand a believer dishonor Christ then “the fear of God” demands we submit to God rather than men. But if those in authority are simply in error, as long as they do not take us from the gospel or from serving God in truth, then “in the fear of God” submit to their rule, trusting our Sovereign to overrule their error for our good.  This is submission “in the fear of God.”
