SUNDAY’S READING IN PROVERBS

Proverbs 2: 3: Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

?-----------------------------?

God carried Moses to the top of the hill where God honored him, buried his body out of sight then carried him into heaven. Christ carried the law to the top of Mt. Calvary where our Substitute magnified and honored the law, where he made that dead wherein his people were held then Christ ascended into heaven.  It would be as foolish, even redundant, now for a believer to go back to the law to obtain anything needed to be accepted of God as it would be for the children of Israel to leave Joshua in Canaan to go back into the wilderness to dig up Moses body and ask him to carry them into the land of Canaan to which they were already delivered.

?-----------------------------?

God’s mercy is freely bestowed upon His chosen people.   But not at the expense of His Holy Justice.  God CANNOT, and WILL NOT, pardon you, or me, unless we have honored His Holy Law perfectly.  He CANNOT, and WILL NOT, have mercy on you, or me, unless we have perfectly satisfied His Holy Justice!  Jesus Christ is the only man who walked on this earth in perfect obedience to God the Father.  Christ our Saviour is every believer’s representative.  He didn’t come to change God’s law; He came to fulfill it.  AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE DID!  While He was here on this earth, Jesus Christ pleased God the Father in everything that He did (Matthew 3:13 - 17; John 8:29).  He was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:8).  His perfect obedience satisfied the holy justice of God for His chosen people.  Absolutely NOTHING can be laid to the charge of God‘s elect (Romans 8:32 - 33).  That’s why God has mercy on those Jesus Christ suffered and bled and died for.   Our Heavenly Father sees no sin in Jesus Christ our risen Saviour.  “There is therefore NOW no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Pastor Gene Harmon

RECEIVING

. . . Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:9)

“If you buy something, you purchased it.  If you earn something, you worked for it.  If you deserve something, then you merited it. But when you receive something, it was a free gift.  Our free gift is grace and faith in Christ, even the salvation of our souls.”

                                                                       Pastor David Eddmenson

?-----------------------------?

If our prayers are prompted by the Spirit, made perfect through the intercession of the Savior, and thereby accepted of the Father they must be answered else there would be a cleavage in the Godhead, which is an impossibility.   Pastor Terry Worthan

?-----------------------------?

Eve was not taken out of Adam's head to top him, neither out of his feet to be trampled on by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected by him, and near his heart to be loved by him.            Matthew Henry

?-----------------------------?

I have no idea who wrote this but concerning covetousness for this world they wrote this true statement, “When all is gained, how little then is won! And yet to gain that little, how much is lost!”

REMEMBER THIS THE WHOLE YEAR THROUGH

Deuteronomy 11: 10  For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs: 11: But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: 12: A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

Canaan is a type of heavenly glory. But this is a description also of Christ’s church—every true believer in particular—as we pass through this world. (1 Pet 5: 7; 3:12) Those who are sanctified, redeemed and given faith to believe on Christ have already entered into God’s promised land of rest, Christ Jesus. (Heb 4: 10)  So as we go through this New Year, may God be pleased to comfort us with this assurance, that Christ’s church, even every individual believer, is “a land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.”

We preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord

“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5).

The apostle describes in this verse the ministry of every true preacher; we preach Christ, not ourselves! We point you to Christ and not to us, our wisdom, or our organization. With that in mind, when can it be said of us that we are preaching ourselves and not Christ?

1) When we preach what we think instead of preaching what God says.

2) When we preach what men want to hear instead of what men ought to hear.

3) When we seek to please men by taking the offense out of the cross and glory in the flesh.

4) When we set ourselves up as spiritual authorities over the consciences of our hearers, judging their salvation by their relationship with us and our requirements.

5) When we try to impress men with our wisdom, knowledge, or piety.

6) When we become ambitious for personal recognition and begin to boast of numbers and converts and attach our names to buildings, organizations, monuments, and movements.

7) When we fear public opinion and court the friendship and approval of carnal men at the expense of truth.

8) When we allow our hearers to entertain any hope of salvation except by the sovereign grace of God through the merits of Jesus Christ.

9) When we preach for any other reason than the glory of Jesus Christ and the eternal good of our hearers.         Pastor Henry Mahan

?-----------------------------?

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses. (Col 2:13) When God saves a sinner, it's without any contribution or effort from the sinner. What can a dead man do? Nothing! He certainly cannot make the first step toward God. He's a spiritual corpse! But God made the first step by His eternal purpose of grace in election, by accomplished redemption at Calvary, and by the mighty operations of His grace in Christ for His people. In Christ God raised His elect, having forgiven us all trespasses. New life and faith is freely given to chosen, redeemed sinners, because Christ is risen and reigns! “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him (John 17:1-2).” Pastor Eric Richards
