Brethren, I thank God for your faithfulness to
the Lord and His gospel and for your gracious lovingkindness and generosity throughout
the year. As we face 2021 my prayer is
that God will keep us looking to Christ with a lively hope assured and comforted
in the truth that our Sovereign is “able to do exceeding abundantly above
all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us” (Eph 3:
20-21). As the hymn writer, Frances
Havergal, wrote:
Faith that increaseth walking in light;
Hope that aboundeth happy and bright;
Love that is perfect casting out fear —
These shall insure you a happy New Year.

THE INFINITE CHRIST
There is infinite value in that precious
blood which He shed upon the Cross to make an atonement for sin. There is infinite pity in His heart toward
sinners. There is infinite readiness and
willingness on His part to receive all who come to Him. There is infinite power in His arm to deliver
and keep that which is committed unto Him.
There is no sinner so depraved that Christ’s blood cannot cleanse
him. There is no sinner so bound by the
fetters of Satan that Christ cannot free him.
There is no sinner so weary and despondent that Christ cannot satisfy
him. The promise of the Saviour himself
is, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest” (Matthew 11:28). O sin-sick soul,
put him to the test for yourself, and see.
Come to Christ just as you are, in all your wretchedness and need, and
He will gladly receive you, blot out all your iniquities, and put a new song in
your mouth. May God in His grace cause
some despondent ones to prove for themselves the infinite sufficiency of His

A LESSON FOR BELIEVERS
FROM 2020
2020 has been a
year like no other for most people. A new virus seemingly arising in China in
2019 has spread around the world and has been named as the cause of very many
deaths (though exactly how many we will never truly know). But we know that “all
things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called
according to his purpose” (Rom8:28). We have rightly felt anger at our
politicians and their advisers who have inflicted such damage on societal
health, business, employment and prosperity by their cruel lockdown policies.
But what can we see of God’s good intention for his people in all of this. No
doubt there are countless blessings that will be revealed, but here’s one that
strikes me very much right now; God is teaching his people to loosen their grip
on the things of this world. Our happiness, prosperity and health, and that of
our families, is not to be found here but rather in God’s glorious Kingdom of
righteousness and peace. Turning from this world for hope, we look to heaven
(Col3:1-3). That’s where to lay up treasure, where moth and rust does not
corrupt (Matt6:19,20). And as we move into 2021, we look to God to continue to
work out his sovereign purposes of grace until Christ returns to take us home. Allan

THEY NEED THE COLD

Whately wrote about the introduction of a certain plant into England years ago.
When the plants were brought to the gardener, he took for granted that they
required warmth; so he put them in the hothouse. Day by day the plants withered
a bit more and more, until the gardener threw them out on a compost pile IN THE
COLD. There they began to revive and to grow and to bloom. THEY NEEDED THE
COLD!
The great Husbandman often saves HIS
plants by throwing them out into the cold. The nipping frosts of trial and
affliction causes the mind to think on the Lord; new thoughts and feelings are
revived! The heart becomes dead to the world and looks up to God. From the
night of sorrow rises the joy of morning. "Weeping may endure for the night, but joy cometh in the morning."
Without the night, the joy would not be so welcomed! From the crucifixion of
the old man comes the resurrection of the new man. Henry

HE NEVER CHANGES
“Jesus Christ the same
yesterday, and today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
I am
so thankful that as I grow older and things change, inside and out, that there
is One who never changes.
1. His love never changes with time, for He loved
me with an everlasting love that knows no change.
2. His power never changes. He is just as able to
keep me from falling today as when I first began.
3. His Word never changes: “God is not a man, that He should
lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He
not do it? Or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” (Numbers
23:19) Has He not magnified His Word above His Name?
4. His election of me shall never change. He
will never cast off those whom He has chosen, for they will never do anything
that He did not know about and has not already taken care of.
5. The power of His blood shall never change. It
still cleanses from all sin. No matter how deep the stain has gone,
His blood washes it away.
6. His Sacrifice will never change, it will never
lose its effectiveness because it is always fresh in the midst of the Throne of
God: “And I beheld, and lo, in the
midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders,
stood a Lamb as it had been slain….” (Rev. 5:6).
We have a living sacrifice standing in the midst
of the Throne of God. When we rise out of our beds in the morning
and go through our changes, just remember that there is One who remains the
same yesterday, today, and forever. The Rock
