“Let me observe to you something relating to experience, which you
would do well to lay up in your minds. It may be of use to you hereafter, when
you may be tempted to doubt of your interest in Christ’s
satisfaction. Have you any reason to believe that you have, at any time,
had communion with God, in private or in public, in your closet, or in the
family, or in the house of God, under any ordinance, either the ministry of the
Word, or prayer, or the Supper of the Lord? Then you may be assured Christ
has made satisfaction for you; or you would never have enjoyed such communion.”
Pastor John Gill (1697-1771)

Brother Scott Richardson once wrote, — “I defy anyone to find a
solitary text of Scripture in the New Testament that uses the law to motivate,
inspire, regulate, or even guide the believer. Believers are motivated by love,
inspired by gratitude, regulated by grace, and guided by the Holy Spirit. The
whole Word of God, the complete revelation of His will is our law. Our lives
are governed by love, not by fear. We
walk by faith, not by legislation. We
walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh (Romans 8:9-14; Galatians 3:3).”

“That, according as it is
written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:31)
What do believers glory in
when they glory in the Lord? They glory in His holiness. (Ex. 24:15-17)
They glory in His grace. (Lev. 9:22,23) And they glory in His mercy. (2
Chron.7:1-3)
What is the greatest
display of the glory of the Lord’s holiness, grace, and mercy that the world
has ever seen, and could ever know? The Person and work of the Lord Jesus
Christ on the cross of calvary! Holiness demanded a sacrifice for sin. Grace
provided one, and Mercy poured the Blood of that sacrifice all over the sinners
that God chose to save!
“…God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ…” (Gal. 6:14) Pastor

CONTENT WITH THE LORD
I was just reading about Fanny Crosby. Although she was born blind,
she never complained nor did she ever even regret being born that way. When she
was eight years old she wrote these words:
Oh, what a happy soul am I!
Although I cannot see,
I am resolved that in this world
Contented I will be.
How many blessings I enjoy
That other people don’t;
To weep and sigh because I’m blind,
I cannot, and I won’t.
A preacher once said to
Miss Crosby, “I think it is a great pity that the Master, when He showered so
many gifts upon you, did not give you sight.” She answered right back, “Do you
know that if at birth I had been able to make one petition to my Creator, it
would have been that I should be born blind?” “Why?” The preacher asked.
“Because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight
will be that of my Savior.” She replied.
Fanny Crosby wrote a song entitled, “My Savior First of All.” It goes
like this:
“When my life work is ended and I cross
the swelling tide,
when the bright and glorious morning I
shall see,
I shall know my Redeemer when I reach
the other side,
and His smile will be the first to
welcome me.
O the soul thrilling rapture when I
view His blessed face
and the luster of His kindly beaming
eye;
How my full heart will praise Him for the
mercy, love and grace
that prepared for me a mansion in the
sky.”
We often talk about being
content in Christ and thank God for it. But for grace to be perfectly content
with Christ and to be anxious about nothing else as long as we possess Him and
this good hope of being with Him and like Him. -Pastor Bruce Crabtree

HOPE
Hebrews 6: 19: Which hope
we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth
into that within the veil; 20: Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even
Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Hope is an earnest desire for an object, accompanied with the expectation
of obtaining it. Spiritual hope includes
that, but it also includes something natural hope does not. It includes the
sure and steadfast assurance that we shall receive what we hope for. The object
of the believer’s hope is Christ. Our
expectation is to be with Christ in glory in His perfect righteousness. The
assurance of our hope is Christ, who himself is our Hope. Our hope is sure and
steadfast because in and by Christ all God’s covenant-promises are fulfilled
for us, apart from our works.

THE LONG WAY
Exodus 13: 17: And it came to pass, when Pharaoh
had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land
of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest
peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: 18: But God led the people about, through
the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up
harnessed out of the land of Egypt.
Last
week we considered how God often takes us the long way, although the way we
want to go is near. But God does it to
protect us from the evil. Not only that,
God gave the children of Israel much more by taking them the long way through
the wilderness of the Red Sea.
Recently, I checked the city codes then ordered
a small, pre-built shed, paid for it and set a date for it to be
delivered. Then the township informed me
that I could not put it on my property due to an ordinance that forbids any new
buildings within 150 feet from the creek that borders my property. It reminded me that when we bought our home
ten years ago we were told we could not ever add-on because of that ordinance. I
could not ever even add an extra bathroom. So for the past two months I have
been back and forth with the township trying to get a permit for my shed. I had
to contact the former owners. Then their real estate agent. Then my neighbors.
All in an attempt to prove to the township that a shed was formerly on my
property which was destroyed by a tree. But it was a dead end. I had to reschedule the delivery date three
times. It was looking as if I had wasted
my money on a shed. Then out of the blue, the township sent me a permit stating
that the ordinance did not apply to my property.
So Monday, finally, my shed was delivered.
As I stood admiring it, I thought about this passage from last Sunday. The Lord certainly took me the long way. But
by doing so, not only did I get my shed, I got a written statement from the
township which will now allow us to add on that extra bathroom. We would be amazed if we could see all the
times in our lives that, by taking us the long way, God protects us from the
evil and provides what we otherwise would not have, although the way we wanted
to go was near.
